Perri Page of Columbia in Division I and Nkiru Awaka of Queens in Divisions II/III have been named Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.
The designations, for games played Dec. 8-14, are unique in that they encompass players from 70 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
This is the first weekly MBWA honor in her collegiate career for Page and the second for Awaka who was similarly acclaimed last season on Feb.11.
A 5-11 senior guard from Pittsburgh, PA, Page led the Lions (7-4) in their only game of the week to a last-second 54-53 victory at Seton Hall by recording a double-double with a team-high 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds along with four steals, two assists and the game-winning basket. She connected on 7-of-14 shots from the field in the contest.
Early on, Page tallied nine first-quarter points to help Columbia end the period on a 10-0 run after trailing by 11 points as Seton Hall held a 17-16 edge. Then, late in the game, she canned the game-winning basket with just 0.7 seconds left to lift the Lions to a 54-53 victory.
