Woody Johnson should fire Aaron Glenn now and save himself further embarrassment down the road. He wouldn’t be saving money, as he bought into Glenn’s braggadocio with a multi-year contract, but at no point this season his rookie coach has shown an ability to motivate this team into a winning franchise.
Oh sure, the Jets have won three games, two on Nick Folk’s leg, one against the woeful Browns, but why does AG continue to act like he’s 13-3 and not his actual 3-13 record.
As Bill Parcells famously said, “You are what your record says you are.”
Like many Jets fans, I had hope going into the season, but I already had suspicions when Glenn rudely treated future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers like an unwanted guest when he made the QB travel cross-country “on his own dime” as Rodgers later complained when he already had a strong inkling he wasn’t going to resign him. The proper way to handle that affair was for Jets management to head west on Woody’s private jet to meet with him.
It’s impossible to prove, but I’ll always believe that Pittsburgh’s current record of 9-7 under Rodgers could conceivably have been the Jets record this year had they resigned him, drafted Jaxson Dart to learn under #8 – instead of another fat offensive lineman in the first round that could have been found in later rounds – and Jets fans would be pondering possible playoff scenarios instead of anxious for a high draft pick.
And yes, Armand Membou had a decent rookie season on the offensive line, but the QB position is far more important toward winning games, and I’ll always believe good scouting could have found another “big fatty” – as some call them – that could have done the job as well.
Glenn showed his hand again in Game 1 this season against the Steelers. Glenn showed he was good at long-stride dancing but he also displayed an I-Know-More-Than-You attitude by opting to go for two points after touchdowns instead of safely kicking PATs. And those two missed points cost him the game, when they lost 34-32.
Having a pompous attitude toward reporters also does not bode well. Challenging them as he has done on occasion, when they are there merely to report the story and not be the story is another sign of disrespect.
Getting back to the QB and the draft pick, what makes any Jets fan think that Glenn, and GM Darren Mougey, are the right team to select the next quarterback when they thought Justin Fields would lead them to the playoffs. Yeah, how did that work out?
And Tyrod “Soon to be Injured” Taylor was only a little help, wasn’t he.
Steve Serby in The NY Post labeled Glenn’s 2025 Jets worse than the Rich Kotite 1-16 Jets of 1996! Ooh, now that’s bad.
Jets fans have made their vote by not showing up to home games, and those who do fill the stadium are at least a considerable portion rooting for the other team.
How does that feel, Woody?
The 2025 Jets started out appearing competitive with one-score losses in three out of their first four games – and all four were losses – but in the month of December they’ve lost by a collective 153-46, or by an average of 38-11.
That’s not competitive. They’re a laughing stock. The rest of the league are jealous of the teams that had the Jets on their schedule. The team has given up and are only playing for themselves, hoping for a contract next year, not to be cut loose. The defense is already on vacation, mentally.
Glenn continues to talk big in press conferences and keeps saying they’re showing improvement, and the plan is working.
Where, Aaron, where?
So here’s a projection for the next few years in Jets history.
The odds of them getting the highly regarded Heisman Trophy winner Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza are actually quite slim unless they end up with the number one pick – which is even slimmer – as the Las Vegas Raiders are currently tabbed with the first pick, and they need a QB, too!
As has happened several times in recent history, the Jets get stuck with the second best quarterback in the draft (see Sam Darnold, Zach Wilson) and they’ve either had the worst luck, worst coaching, or not enough patience to wait for them to develop.
This current half-decade of failures all go back to that worthless last game win against the LA Rams, 23-20, on Dec. 20, 2020. Had they lost that game they would have had the first pick and drafted Trevor Lawrence, who went to Jacksonville, and he has shown to have had a somewhat decent career thus far.
But no, those 2020 Jets jumped for joy that day with the three-point win, and damned the franchise for at least five years, and looks like a lot more.
Ok, so let’s speculate that Woody keeps Glenn and they draft the second-best quarterback…again! They’ll still need a veteran to give the kid a taste of the NFL and it had better not be Fields again.
Ok, they have a wealth of draft picks and a boatload of cap space to improve the team with free agents. But again, anyone who thought Fields was the answer for the offense and Steve Wilks was the guy to lead the defense might not have the ability to make the right choices to go forward.
So, best case scenario…they sign good free agents, make good draft choices, and have a weak schedule based on their lousy showing this past season. Is Glenn capable of pulling a “Patriots?” and go from 4-13 in 2024 to winning the AFC East and headed to the playoffs this year? Not likely.
Guess that’s the continually disappointed Jets fan in me to not have the confidence they will improve.
Good luck, Woody, but I feel you would be best to fire Glenn and finally go with a proven coach, whoever that might be, to lead the troops.
