Dillon Mitchell of St. John’s in Division I and Darren Rubin of New York University in Divisions II/III and Kaety L’Amoreaux of Fairfield in Division I and Lucy Coogan of Caldwell in Divisions II/III have been named Men’s and Women’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn., respectively, the organization announced today.
The designations, for games played Jan. 19-25, are unique in that they encompass players from 70 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.
This is the first MBWA weekly honor for Mitchell, Rubin and Coogan and third for L’Amoreaux, who also won on Dec. 9 and 23.
A 6-8 senior forward from Tampa, FL, Mitchell — who was named to the Big East Conference weekly honor roll — helped the No. 25-ranked Red Storm (15-5, 8-1) overcome a pair of double-digit second-half deficits by averaging 17.0 points on 63.6% (14-of-22) shooting from the floor, along with 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals.
A 6-2 graduate guard from Dayton, OH, Rubin — who also was selected the University Athletic Association player of the week — averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and a steal as the Violets (12-4, 3-2) captured a pair of road victories against ranked opponents last weekend.
A 5-6 junior guard from Endwell, NY, L’Amoreaux averaged 25.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 steals in helping the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference co-leading Stags (17-3, 11-0) remain undefeated in league play and extend their current overall winning streak to 13 with three victories last week.
A 6-0 senior forward from Kilkenny, Ireland, Coogan — who also was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference player of the week — averaged 22.5 points on a pair of double-doubles as the Cougars (13-6, 6-5) registered two road victories last week, edging Staten Island 67-64 Tuesday and beating Goldey-Beacom 86-48 Saturday.
