Yes, it was another bad New York football Sunday.
This time around, there were some second takes and some head scratchers.
Think about the fact that both teams combined for 19 points. Yes, I said 19 points.
The Giants accounted for 13 points in a game they could have scored more, while the Jets couldn’t find a way to score more than six.
You can start getting the shovels out and throwing the dirt. The New York football season is about to be buried.
It was just another exercise in a season of futility of five combined wins in 16 weeks. You can hear Taps being played in the background.
Giants’ quarterback Jaxson Dart threw only 13 passes, five in the first half against the Vikings in the 16-13 loss,a move that left mostly everyone dumbfounded in a winnable game against the listless Vikings.
Dart threw five passes for two yards, and finished the game with seven completions for 33 yards. He ran only twice for seven yards and was sacked four times.
Last week, Dart threw 36 passes, completing 20 for 246 yards.
Huh?
Maybe Giants’ interim head coach Mike Kafka knows he is coming back next year and wants to preserve Dart against Brian Flores’ aggressive defense? However, you can bet that’s not the case.
Dart’s numbers are those that get a quarterback pulled, and the rookie wasn’t that sharp all afternoon. He might as well sat the game.
The Giants’ running game behind Tyrone Tracy (16-71) and Devin Singletary (11-47) had a rather productive day, and the Giants ran off 15 running plays before they threw a pass.
On the other side of the ball, the Giants had a respectable day holding Minnesota to 240 yards and recording five sacks, the difference being a field goal with just over four minutes to go.
At 2-13 and losers of nine straight, the Giants now can only hope to hang on to the number one overall pick. That likely will come down to a showdown with the 2-13 Raiders in Las Vegas Sunday afternoon.
As for the Jets, you knew they wouldn’t come out of New Orleans with a win. Ironically, their last time there was a 30-9 loss as opposed to their 29-6 defeat there Sunday. It was Zach Wilson who couldn’t produce a touchdown four years ago.
These were the same Saints once viewed as the league’s worst, and now have won three straight under first-year head coach Kellen Moore, who has guided his team to a 5-9 record.
Jets’ first-year head coach Aaron Glenn insisted that Brady Cook was the Jets’ best option at quarterback despite having Tyron Taylor healthy. Cook looked like he should have been calling signals for the defunct New York Stars or New Jersey Generals.
In three games, Cook has six interceptions and one touchdowns with a miniscule 9.7 quarterback rating.
Cook was tossed around and sacked eight times by the Saints’ defense, led by ex-Jets DeMarco Davis and Nathaniel Shepherd.
Except for a fumble recovery on the Saints’ opening drive, the Jets’ defense again lacked intensity and interest. In defense of the Jets’ defense, their unit is littered with second- and third-teamers. Linebacker Jamie Sherwood had a big game with 11 tackles and a sack.
The Jets have made it clear that they will be in the hunt for a franchise quarterback in the draft, hopefully with the top pick in the draft, and their remaining games against New England and in Buffalo practically guarantee them to finish with their current three wins.
If you’re a diehard fan of either team, you’ll be watching the final two games. There’s little left to watch except trying to figure out where they will draft.
For another season, New York football is bad and dead.
You’ll have to wait until next season for a possible resurrection.
