Can the Jets’ defense rebound in 2026?
The real question is just how long will it take? It might be 2027.
They were ranked 29th overall last season with only Dallas, Washington, and Cincinnati ahead of them. Within that, they allowed a second-worst 29.6points per game.
New York forced four turnovers, and yes, we all know didn’t have an interception. That’s still a mind-boggling stat.
So, how can they get better?
In GM Darren Mougey Jets’ fans should trust.
In less than two seasons, Mougey has totally flipped the defense. It started with the trades of Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, both moves that indicated that Mougey has a backbone.
During the offseason, Mougey drafted defensive tackle David Moore and brought in seven new players to fill the void. Moore actually will be an outside linebacker.
Jet favorite DeMario Davis returned as a 37-year-old veteran linebacker who will serve as a mentor to Jamie Sherwood, and the kind of veteran leadership the team needs.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, Nashon Wright, and Dane Belton were pivotal pickups in the secondary to pair with rising star Brandon Stephens. The newcomers have suddenly created depth, and second-year safety Malachi Moore and rookie D’Angelo Ponds should see time.
On the defensive front, T’Vondre Sweat and David Onyemata are expected to get the starting nod and join incumbent Harrison Phillips. Joseph Assai will fill one of the linebacker spots.
On, little-known Brian Duker was tapped as the new defensive coordinator, but he will likely serve that role in name only. Head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he will call the defense.
On paper, it looks like a definite improvement. Based on what happened last season and with the new resumes added, there should be some raised level of play.
So far in camp, the new-look defense has gotten some raves. Moore has gained some high marks despite being nagged with an ankle injury.
Mougey apparently has done his homework.
Still, there is the question on how the unit will mesh, and how long will it take? If the offense sputters early, the pressure will be on the defense to keep them respectable.
Looking at everything realistically, can we expect this team to win more than five or six games this season? Sure, things can change.
Mougey has played his role. It will be up to Duker, Glenn and the new cast to play their part and rebound from last year.
