Hofstra’s Davis, WCSU’s Henry Named Met Writers Men’s Basketball Players of the Week

December 16, 2025 by Jerry Milani Leave a Comment

Cruz Davis of Hofstra in Division I and Marcel Henry of Western Connecticut State in Divisions II/III have been named Men’s Players of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Assn.

The designations, for games played Dec. 8-14, are unique in that they encompass players from 70 Met area schools across Divisions I, II and III.

This is the second consecutive week that Cruz has received this MBWA honor and the first such accolade in his college career for Henry.

A 6-3 junior guard from Plano, TX, Davis — who was named the Coastal Athletic Association co-player of the week — averaged 18.5 points and 6.0 assists in leading the Pride (8-4) to a pair of wins last week, including his team’s second victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent in under a week.

Davis, who has scored in double figures in all 12 of Hofstra’s games this season, shot 56.5% from the field (13-of-23), 50% from 3-point range (4-of-8) and 88% from the free throw line (7-of-8) as the Pride walloped Old Westbury 92-23 at home Wednesday and then spearheaded a 70-69 road victory over Syracuse on Saturday.

Playing just over 20 minutes against Old Westbury, Davis registered 15 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Davis was the best player on the court once again against an ACC opponent as he masterminded a thrilling 70-69 road win over Syracuse just six days after a career day in a win over Pitt last Sunday. Against the host Orange, Davis had a game-high 22 points, a career-high nine assists and played all 40 minutes in the historic win for the Pride. He shot 57% from the field in the game (8-of-14), was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 at the free throw line

Hofstra, which had not beaten an ACC team since 2015 before last week, now has two wins this month against members of the ACC, and Davis has been the star of both contests.

A 6-8 sophomore center from Yonkers, NY, Henry — who also was named the Little East Conference player of the week — averaged 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in leading the Wolves (5-4) to a 101-92 non-conference victory on Thursday at Hartford and a 92-77 league triumph at home Saturday over Plymouth State.

Henry shot 65.5% (19-of-29) from the field and 78.6% (11-of-14) at the free throw line in the two games.

He posted a career-high 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting to go with seven rebounds at Hartford.

Henry registered a double-double with 21 points on 8-of-10 accuracy along with 10 rebounds and two blocks against Plymouth State.

He is ranked seventh this season in Little East scoring (17.6 ppg) and ninth in rebounds (6.3 rpg).

Players receiving MBWA Division I Honorable Mention for the week: Brandon Benjamin, Fairfield; Budd Clark, Seton Hall; Greg Gordon, LIU; Justin Menard, Marist; Kenny Noland, Columbia; Erik Pratt, Stony Brook.

Players receiving MBWA Divisions II/III Honorable Mention for the week: Leyi Adebayo, Baruch; Jason Edokpayi, Bridgeport; TJ Holloway, Mercy; Luke Kolaja, NYU; Asa Kone, Staten Island; Amar Ndiaye, Lehman; Fred Orock Jr., William Paterson; Yoav Oselka, Yeshiva; Andrew Saint-Louis, Manhattanville; Christopher Smith, York.

Previous MBWA 2025-26 Men’s Players of the Week: Dec. 9, Cruz Davis, Hofstra, Div. 1; Jeremiah Anderson, Felician, Divs. II/III.
