GLEN HEAD, N.Y. — When the yellow Blue Bird bus began to unload students from Saint Ann’s School at the Glen Head, N.Y., offices of the Strat-O-Matic, the media company whose games have entertained players of all ages for 65 years, it wasn’t a normal stop. Instead, 29 boys and girls in grades four through 12 from the Brooklyn-based school joined more than 200 adults from around the country who braved inclement weather to attend the company’s annual Opening Day on Friday, the first chance for gamers to get their hands on the 2026 offerings, including 2025 season cards and numerous other new products.
For the kids, it was more than an opportunity to get out of class for a few hours. Strat-O-Matic is not just a game to these youngsters and their teachers; it’s a way to make math, probability and statistics real, relevant, and — dare we say — fun.
“Thousands of students through hundreds of programs across the country have used our games, from the basic Baseball Express all the way to our super advanced versions, to help learn these important skills,” said Adam Richman, President and CEO of Strat-O-Matic. “To have these kids show up was a welcome and unexpected bonus to a day that has always been so important to us.”
Saint Ann’s Strat-O-Matic club, in which the older students mentor the younger ones, creating lasting attachments to baseball, mathematics and Strat-O-Matic, is a full-on endeavor, with the students drafting teams and playing games just like the many leagues adult fans have enjoyed for years.
“We think the Saint Ann’s program, and those like it, can be a blueprint for other schools looking to find creative ways to make math come to life,” added Richman, whose father, Hal, invented the game, and whose mother, Sheila, was inducted into the Strat-O-Matic Hall of Fame today along with three others critical to the company’s success and growth.
The kids had the chance to see the inside of the Strat-O-Matic offices, roll a few games and meet Hal and Adam. It’s an experience they hope to repeat, and further buoy interest in their program among other students at Saint Ann’s.
