There’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding Jets’ quarterback Geno Smith.
Always has been and likely always will be.
It really isn’t anything new. The episodes keep rolling along.
Smith, who was looking to redeem himself as a Jets’ quarterback this season, is now faced with a possible suspension in regard to an alleged domestic battery incident involving him and his girlfriend in Florida.
It is an “active investigation” and the Davie Police Department “won’t be releasing any information at this time.”
That’s not a good sign for the 35-year-old Smith, who wants a final chance to redefine his Jets’ career that began as a promising second-round pick in 2013.
Unfortunately, his Jets’ career never took flight, as it was marked by inconsistencies, injuries, and altercations.
His latest episode can lead to a possible conclusion for his Green and White career.
Is Geno Smith cursed?
In his first full Jets’ season, Smith threw 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. He followed that with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions off a miserable 4-12 season and the end of Rex Ryan. He did return late in the season after a Week Seven benching for Michael Vicks after Smith went 2-for-8 with three interceptions against the Bills
Todd Bowles came on board, and Smith had the starting job. But Smith broke his jaw in a preseason altercation with linebacker IK Enemkpali over a plane ticket. Smith was done and Ryan Fitzpatrick had a banner season.
But Fitzpatrick slumped at the start of the 2016 campaign, and Smith was back in the driver’s seat.
However, sevens weren’t lucky for him again.
In Week Seven, Smith took his ACL, and his Jets career was over. Fate proved to be never on his side with the Jets.
He had two unproductive stints with the Giants and Chargers before he landed in Seattle, which was a favorable outcome.
But Smith decided to leave the Raiders for a big payday last year, and it was a disaster.
The Jets shocked the football world when they sent a 2026 seventh-round pick to Las Vegas, and saw Smith as a temporary savior for the franchise. GM Darren Mougey loves him, and head coach Aaron Glenn spoke in terms of Smith and “The Promised Land.”
Smith initially was viewed as the bridge to a possibly Arch Manning or another in the 2027 quarterback draft lot.
As of this writing, the Jets have Clemson rookie Cade Klubnik, Brady Cook, and Bailey Zappe. If Smith is suspended, you can see how Mougey has to find another quarterback.
Yet, this Jets’ brass is confident that Smith’s cursed Jets’ history will find a new path.
